CREATED BY: Masaki Watanabe

NO. OF EPISODES: 11

GENRE: Mixology

YEAR: 2006

COUNTRY: Japan

Bartender follows the nightlife of Ryū Sasakura, a bartending prodigy who is said to mix the best cocktails anyone has ever tasted. Sasakura bides his time in a bar named Eden Hall, hidden in a nook of the Ginza district in downtown Tokyo. It is said that normal people cannot simply find and enter Eden Hall, but they must be invited in maxresdefaultby the host. Over the course of the anime, various figures of high and low stature, all of whom share unusual troubles and heavy burdens, are “invited” into Eden Hall and are treated to Sasakura’s fine drinks, which, with guidance from the young bartender, lead the customers to reflect upon their lives and decide on a course of action to tackle their problems.

Bartender is an interesting anime to say the least. Who thought there would be an anime series about bartending and mixology? Well if there can be an anime about bread, I guess bartender can pass. Bartender is unique as there really is no general over arcing story, each episode is simple and only focuses on a single encounter at a time. Also each single episode features at least one recipe for the cocktail of the episode, many of which I had not thought of even since I am a bartender-customernewish bartender. One thing I would also like to point out is that hair animation!

Bartender was rather hard to get through, as unless they were talking about the alcohol in the episode I really wasn’t interested. Also I wish this series was dubbed, as I have a handful of voice actors in mind that would work spectacularly. I’m definitely not diving into the subbed vs dubbed debate, especially since the originally Japanese voice actors were perfect for this series. Just wish it was dubbed so I could compare.

PROS:

  • Mixology.
  • Sasakura character.
  • Alcohol recipes.

CONS:

  • Pacing.
  • Story Structure.

SCORE: 7.5 / 10
