When Anastasia Steele, a literature student, goes to interview the wealthy Christian Grey as a favor to her roommate Kate Kavanagh, she encounters a beautiful, brilliant and intimidating man. The innocent and naive Ana starts to realize she wants him. Despite his enigmatic reserve and advice, she finds herself desperate to get close to him. Not able to resist Ana’s beauty and independent spirit, Christian Grey admits he wants her too, but on his own terms. Ana hesitates as she discovers the singular tastes of Christian Grey – despite the embellishments of success, his multinational businesses, his vast wealth, and his loving family, Grey is consumed by the need to control everything.

50-shadesI have to begin this review by stating I was actually really excited for the 50 Shades of Grey film, not for the obvious reasons of course. I really wasn’t planning on sitting down and watching a nice hardcore BDSM fest in the theater. 50 Shades had its moments, as the general subject matter as well as what the absorbed from the source material wasn’t horrible. Both Taylor-Johnson and the writer Marcel come from very promising projects, so lets just say I was incredibly disappointed by the time the film was over. I almost walked out.

Beyond that, 50 Shades of Grey is the worst movie I have seen since 2015 started (and it will probably stay that way for the entire year), I hated it even more than Mortdecai, whose review will be up soon. The casting choices were terrible, as none of the main cast could fully encompass their characters. This made for just awkward scenes of people casually flirting and light BDSM. I bet the film was difficult to shoot, so I understand why the awkwardness existed. It was just way too much of it. The lack of chemistry between both main stars was horrendous, which just added to the overall failure of a film that could have been at least somewhat decent.

PROS:

  • Amount taken from source material.
  • Promising director and writer attached.

CONS:

  • No chemistry.
  • Poor casting choices.
  • Set and character design.
  • Definitely a toned down version of the book.

SCORE: 3.5 / 10
